How does a heat pump boiler work?

To understand how a heat pump boiler works, you need to have an idea of the specific technology concerned. Its operating principle is based on the extraction of thermal energy from an external source and its subsequent transfer to the water entering the boiler. This process involves a closed circuit which, for simplicity's sake, can be summarised in three main steps.

  1. Initially, the air is conveyed into an exchanger where a special refrigerant fluid circulates and acquires the heat until it reaches boiling point.
  2. After changing from a liquid to a gaseous state, the refrigerant flows to a compressor in the unit which raises its temperature further to facilitate the exchange of heat to the water to be heated.
  3. Once all the available heat has been transferred, the fluid is directed into an expansion valve that decreases its pressure and lowers its temperature, at which point the refrigerant returns to its original state and begins the cycle again.
